HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — In a bold display of confidence typically reserved for people who think they can “just hop on I-90 real quick,” a local man attempted to rob a Huntington Bank Wednesday morning—only to be politely, efficiently, and almost aggressively suburbanly arrested approximately one minute later.
Witnesses say the man entered the bank at 9:15 a.m., displayed a gun, and demanded money, apparently unaware that he was operating within a municipality where police response times are measured not in minutes, but in “sir, they’re already here.”
“Honestly, it was impressive,” said one customer, who had just finished depositing a check and emotionally preparing for the price of eggs. “He hadn’t even fully committed to the crime yet. It still felt like a ‘draft version’ of a robbery.”
According to police, officers from Hoffman Estates and Inverness responded within one minute of the dispatch call—roughly the same amount of time it takes most residents to complain about property taxes.
Authorities then entered the bank and took the suspect into custody without incident, interruption, or giving him even a brief chance to consider a career pivot.
“At no point did things escalate,” said a police spokesperson. “Which is good, because we were already inside before he could even Google ‘what to do during a bank robbery.’”
Experts say the suspect may have made several critical strategic errors, including:
- Choosing a bank located in a well-funded suburb
- Attempting the robbery during business hours
- Not accounting for the fact that everyone in the building had already called 911 before he finished his sentence
“No injuries were reported,” officials confirmed, “unless you count the suspect’s expectations.”
The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was transferred into FBI custody, where he is expected to face federal charges and, more painfully, a lifetime of being the answer to the question: “What did you think was going to happen?”
At press time, local residents reported feeling shaken, concerned, and mostly relieved that the situation did not interfere with their mid-morning Starbucks pickup schedule.
