Trump Administration Clarifies: Nursing Not a “Real Profession,” But Theology and Podiatry Still Totally Legit, According to Absolutely Real Science

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a bold new interpretation of reality, the Department of Education has announced that nursing — the field responsible for keeping Americans alive, bandaged, hydrated, and vaguely calm since the beginning of hospitals — will no longer qualify as a “professional degree.” Instead, nursing will now be recategorized as something between a hobby and a mildly expensive Pinterest project.

The change comes as part of President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” an 8,000-page legislative smoothie blending tax cuts, student loan restrictions, and whatever else happened to be lying on the desk that day. The bill, shepherded by Education Secretary Linda McMahon (because why wouldn’t the head of WWE run higher ed), cuts Grad PLUS loans for what the administration calls “professional degrees that matter to the vibes of our country.”

Asked to clarify which professions matter to the vibes, the Department listed:

  • Medicine
  • Law
  • Pharmacy
  • Optometry
  • Clinical psychology
  • And, most importantly, theology, because “we need more people professionally qualified to explain why this is fine.”

Fields not considered professional include nursing, teaching, physical therapy, social work, architecture, accounting, and “any job that involves touching a human being or making society function in any way.”

The move stunned nursing organizations, who pointed out that the nation is already short tens of thousands of nurses and would prefer not to eliminate the few remaining humans willing to work 16-hour shifts while being yelled at by people named Gary.

“This threatens the very foundation of patient care,” said Dr. Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, president of the American Nurses Association, moments before collapsing from trying to explain something obvious to adults.

The Department of Education shrugged off concerns as “fake news from Big Band-Aid,” and accused nursing schools of enjoying an “unlimited tuition joyride on the taxpayer dime.” They did not provide evidence for this but did repeat the phrase “joyride” 14 times.

A spokesperson added, “We’re not surprised that some institutions are crying wolf, even though wolves cannot legally cry because they’re not professional enough.”

Meanwhile, Trump supporters praised the decision, noting that “if nurses wanted to be professionals, they should’ve chosen something more respectable, like chiropractic foot fortune-telling or becoming a certified pastor with online coupons.”

Nursing students nationwide responded by Googling “countries that treat nurses like human beings,” while current nurses stared into the middle distance, wondering how the government can watch them literally save people’s lives and conclude:
“Eh. Hobby.”

When asked how theology made the cut, Education Secretary Linda McMahon stated, “Look, if someone can explain the metaphysical relationship between God and your student loan servicer, that’s a skill set worthy of $200,000 in federal backing.”

The changes take effect July 1, 2026 — leaving aspiring nurses a little over a year to decide whether to pursue their dreams, switch to podiatry, or start a theology podcast, which at this point is apparently the most prestigious career path in America.
